The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region Museum The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region Museum

The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region Museum was established in the spring of 1953 in the People's Park in Urumchi City. Anew museum was later built in 1962 at a new site on Xibei Lu. The building occupies a space of 11,000 square meters and is built in a modern style enhanced by local architectural features. The central dome is thirty meters high and from its height one can view the entire city of Urumchi. The Museum presents a wonderful collection of items from the local area as well as items from other areas on the ancient Silk Road. The museum has a large collection of silk items from many periods of history. Brocades from Eastern Han and specialized silk-woven products of the great Tang Dynasty are highlighted. The Xinjiang area has long been China's melting pot. Over 10 ethnic groups live in this vast area. The diversity of their scripts and cultures is exhibited in this museum through archaeological material, including documents in twelve different scripts including a particularly large number from the Han-dynasty finds at Turfan. This documents military, economic, cultural, and political affairs.

Heaven PoolHeaven Pool

Situated in the Heavenly Tianshan range, 115 km northeast of Urumqi, Heaven pool (Tianchi) is arguably one of the nicest spots in all of China. Covering 4.9 sqkm, it's China's answer to Switzerland, with lakes, waterfall and alpine scenery. The crystal water, the pine trees covering the hillsides and the snow capped mountains in the background make is a spectacular sight.

This lake sits halfway up the mountain range and offers excellent walking and horse riding with breathtaking views, which is particularly refreshing for those arriving in Urumqi from the barren deserts elsewhere in Xinjiang.

The Kazakhs set up yurts around the lake for tourist accommodation between May to Sept, around Y40 per head including meals.

The best way to spend your time is to hike around the lake and even up into the hills. The surrounding countryside is quite beautiful. It's a popular tourist destination, you might only enjoy it without the crowd, in the morning and after 5pm.
