Take train from Beijing to Chengde, an imperial resort area 255km away from Beijing in 18th century. Chengde was an obscure town until 1703 when Emperor Kangxi began building a summer palace. Kangxi called his summer creation Bishushanzhuang (Imperial Summer Villa or Fleeing-the-Heat Mountain Villa).

It’s about 113km drive from the centre of Chengde to the Great Wall at Jinshanling. The most popular temples are Putuozongshengzhimiao Temple and Pulingsi Temple, which houses the amazing multiple-armed Godness of Mercy. Putuozongshengzhimiao Temple was built for the chieftains from Xinjiang, Qinghai, Mongolia and Tibet to celebrate Qianlong’s 60th birthday and was also a site for religious assemblies. 150km away from Beijing and 110km away from Chengde.
